Levels of understanding The Scriptures
It is commonly understood that The Scriptures must be understood on a minimum of 4 levels, 

1. P’shat: The direct meaning. 1:1. What we read is what it says.
   If it says that a man was riding into a forest, then that is what is means.
2. Remez: The allegoric/alluded meaning. Symbolic understanding.
   Here we ask what the forest symbolizes, and what the horse is...
3. D’rash: Deep insight, available through deep studies and teachings.
   Studies leading to the level of d’rash, is commonly under a master/teacher, and the students are called “talmidim”, or “disciples” in English. Midrashim (parables) are essential to grow in the level of d’rash.
4. Sod: What is available only through inspiration/revelation (which must be confirmed, to be standing truth). Prophecies are in this group.
   
   N.B By the way, these four levels are parts of a larger number of Biblical founded systems for reading, understanding, and sharing the Bible, and its truth.​
